Database Design

It’s what’s inside that matters. Sure, your database needs to have a clean design, a simple user interface, and a reporting system to match your business needs. But just like people its what’s inside that really counts; correctly structured data tables and fast secure code.

But of course you don’t want to concern yourself with any of that, you just want to be able to trust your developer so you can get on and work. So why should you choose to work with me? Trust takes time and a personal relationship, so let’s talk first about what you want, and whether I am able to deliver.

There are many people out there who will develop a database for you, but few with degree-level training in the formal design principles. I bring to the table both this education and fifteen years experience working in the field.

I specialise in MS Access database systems, suitable for small businesses and either single or small groups of users over local intranets. In addition I have expertise in spreadsheet development and software integration. Most importantly of all, I have excellent problem-solving skills, finding creative solutions to problems.

Spreadsheet Design

Many people use spreadsheets as simple databases, as it’s a very quick and convenient way to enter and record information. The tabular format of spreadsheet data structures (rows for records and columns for fields) is also very intuitive.

Spreadsheets can use a wide range of formulae to perform mathematical calculations and even to manipulate textual data, and hence provide powerful tools to help you manage information and calculate figures.

Even if you would like to do something relatively simple like setting up a mail merge to create bulk emails, letters or labels from a list of addresses, I can help.

And if you find yourself carrying out repetitive mathematical tasks, over and over again, on a large number of similar records, you’ll be amazed at just how much time can be saved by even partially automating the task.
